Holders & Runners
Runners provide the edges used for gliding, stopping and turning. Their steel, profile and sharpening affect how a skate feels, but replacement steel must first match the holder system and size. Inspect edges and runners regularly so damage or excessive wear is identified before play.

Replacement steel for hockey skates
Why keep compatible spare runners?
- Consistent setup:A suitable profile and sharpening help provide the feel you prefer.
- Replacement when needed:A compatible spare pair can reduce disruption if steel is damaged or worn.
- Different conditions:Sharpening preferences may change with ice conditions; profile and hollow are separate choices, not automatic position-based rules.
- Replace the worn component:Replaceable steel lets you renew runners while retaining serviceable boots and holders. It does not itself prevent boot wear.
- Condition checks:Sound edges and securely fitted runners matter. No sharpening setup guarantees prevention of falls or injury.
When spare steel is useful
Cracks, deep damage or steel worn below the manufacturer’s serviceable limits call for assessment and replacement. Dull edges may simply need sharpening. A change in skating feel is a reason to inspect the setup, not proof that the entire runner needs replacing.
Runner choice and playing position
Choose holder-compatible steel first. Profiling changes the longitudinal contact shape, while sharpening creates the hollow across the blade. These should not be confused. Forwards and defenders can have different preferences, but position alone does not dictate width or radius. Goalies need steel intended for their specific goalie holders; it is not universally shorter than player steel.
Compatible models and sizes
- TRUE Shift DLC Goal Steel:Coated goalie steel for the matching TRUE holder system. Verify the exact holder and size.
- TUUK Lightspeed Edge Holder:A Bauer holder designed for a quick runner change. This is the holder, not replacement steel.
- Bauer FLY-X Runners:Compare the specified holder compatibility and size before ordering. A runner model alone does not guarantee faster skating.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I replace my runners?
Replace damaged or excessively worn runners according to the manufacturer’s guidance. Sharpening and replacement are different: loss of edge grip may call for sharpening rather than new steel. There is no universal replacement schedule after every game.
How should I care for replacement steel?
Dry the runners after use, protect them during transport and let them air in dry storage. Do not leave wet blades enclosed in hard guards. Have conventional steel sharpened and inspected by a suitable technician, following any coating-specific instructions.
How does runner material affect feel?
Steel quality, heat treatment and model-specific coatings can affect edge retention and wear. Compare the actual construction, profile and sharpening rather than assuming that lighter steel always improves agility or harder steel always provides more stability.
