Sticks Youth (30-40 Flex)
Young players need sticks that fit their height, hand size and strength. Junior and youth models are generally shorter and easier to load than adult options, with model-specific flex ratings and grip dimensions.
Compare the available lengths, flex ratings, playing sides and designs rather than choosing on age or appearance alone.

Junior and youth hockey sticks
Features for young players
- Suitable size:A stick that fits the player supports handling and technique without unnecessary reach or weight.
- Manageable weight:A lighter, appropriately sized stick can be easier for smaller hands to handle.
- Suitable flex:Choose a rating the player can load naturally when learning to shoot.
- Construction:Compare materials and inspect the stick regularly; lightweight does not mean damage-proof.
Junior stick materials
Junior sticks may use wood or composites including carbon fibre and fibreglass. Foam blade cores and shaft shapes vary by model. Plastic street-hockey sticks have a different intended use and should not be treated as interchangeable with ice hockey equipment.
Left or right?
Left means the left hand is lower on the shaft; right means the right hand is lower. Let the child try a natural grip and follow the marked playing side rather than judging from the direction of the blade’s curve alone.
Choosing junior and youth size
Age ranges such as 7–13 years are only broad references. Junior and youth labels differ between manufacturers; height, hand size, strength and the actual stick dimensions determine fit. Choose equipment for the child now rather than oversizing for growth.

Frequently asked questions
How should a young player hold the stick?
One hand holds the top of the shaft and the lower hand moves according to the skill being practised. A coach can help establish a natural grip and hand spacing for passing, shooting and puckhandling.
When should a junior stick be replaced?
Replace a damaged stick or one that no longer fits. Cracks, splintering or a permanent change in shape require attention. Growth can call for a different length or flex, but not automatically a stiffer stick.
How should a junior stick be cared for?
Wipe away ice, snow and moisture after use, inspect for cracks and splinters, and store it dry. Use suitable protection during transport and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.
